Welcome to the Wye Valley Writers new blog and web site. We are an enthusiastic creative writing group based in Chepstow at the start of the Wye Valley. This is our brand new site packed with information and examples of our work.
What we are
We are a group of people who all write for pleasure. Some of us want to win competitions or have our work published, others simply enjoy writing as a hobby. Between us we write adult and children’s stories, poems, articles and novels, all of which on a wide range of subjects.
The aim of the group is to help members improve their writing.
What we do
We encourage and support each other through sharing topics and ideas and through constructive criticism of each others work. The emphasis is on achieving good quality creative writing.
How we do it
We meet as a group twice a month. Members bring along their work and read it to the group for verbal feedback. It is important for each of us to respect the writers views, even if very different from our own, so we focus on the writing, not the subject. Typical feedback includes discussion about the writers intentions for the reader and whether that is achieved, comments about characters, plotting, or style and how the piece made us feel. There are always helpful suggestions.
The group is not just an audience and writers are expected to seek to understand and acknowledge feedback. Much of our writing has been improved in this way.
Group values
We are all committed to:
- enjoy our meetings
- enjoy and care about each others writing
- respect each other’s views, ideas and beliefs
- keep our discussions confidential
